Although I pretty much chickened out of pressing any of the buttons on the Japanese toilets with visions of the bidet spraying me in the face or something, I've decided to post about them anyway. It seems that no Japanese toilet is normal- most with a self heating toilet seat (I can't help but worry how many germs must love that) buttons to wash yourself, and even play flushing sounds to allow you to do your business out of anyone else's hearing (although apparently the flushing sounds are so fake that it's probably even more embarrassing if anyone was to hear you using it!).
The second picture below also shows another kind of toilet that can been seen throughout Japan. After flushing, the toilet tank refills through a tap-like system, which we've debated about various times on whether it doubles up as a sink to wash your had in (as you can see there's soap near by which would suggest it is, but this wasn't always the case). I do think this is a clever idea, as it recycles the water used to wash your hands, but it still feels like you're washing your hands in toilet water and I'd walk away still looking for a sink to wash my hands properly in.
